What Is Ecdysterone?

26 August 2026

Ecdysterone is a naturally occurring compound found in certain plants, most notably Rhaponticum carthamoides. This article explains what it is, where it comes from and what “full-spectrum” means.

Where it comes from

Ecdysterone is found in Rhaponticum carthamoides, also known as Leuzea or Maral root — a plant native to the Lake Baikal region of Eastern Siberia. The plant has a long history of traditional use by Eastern European athletes.

Full-spectrum vs isolated

A full-spectrum extract uses the whole plant, which naturally contains a group of related compounds (ecdysteroids) such as 20-beta-ecdysterone, makisterone, 24-dehydromakisterone A, carthamosterone, polypodine B and ajugasterone C. This is different from an isolated single compound. Ecdygrowth uses a full-spectrum Rhaponticum carthamoides extract.

FAQs

What plant does ecdysterone come from?

Rhaponticum carthamoides (Leuzea / Maral root).

What does “full-spectrum” mean?

It means the whole-plant extract, containing the natural range of ecdysteroids rather than a single isolated compound.

Is ecdysterone an anabolic steroid?

No. Despite the name, ecdysteroids are naturally occurring plant compounds and are not anabolic-androgenic steroids or human hormones.
